If you work with color, you know that tricky questions rarely come up when everything is running perfectly at your workplace. They crop up beside a printing press, during a client demo, while checking a print proof, or when someone asks why two colors that look identical on screen turn out differently in production.
That’s why we created calc ICC.
calc ICC is an ICC color conversion tool for iPhone and iPad, powered by the Little CMS engine. It is designed for those critical moments when you need to check a color or a conversion, or understand what a profile does, but you don’t have a desktop application at hand or the software on your laptop isn’t licensed.
The profiles you actually use
calc ICC supports input and output ICC profiles, as well as DeviceLink profiles and swatchbooks. It supports a wide range of color spaces, including RGB, CMYK, Lab, LCh, XYZ, and multichannel ECG, with up to 15 channels.
Why the conversion changed
Converting a value from one color space to another is only part of the answer, the results depend on the rendering intent, black point compensation… calc ICC allows you to experiment directly with these options. It enables you to analyze numerical values, understand the conditions determining them, and explain the reason for the result.
The Ink recipe
When we convert a CMYK color from one printing profile to another, the final Lab value is not the whole story. The ink percentages also matter because they determine how the color is built on press.
calc ICC includes a “maintain formula” option that helps preserve the original CMYK recipe during the conversion. In practice, this means we can move a job to a different printing condition while keeping the ink structure as close as possible to the original. That makes the result easier to reproduce and reduces unnecessary changes to a recipe that is already working.
A local tool for critical decisions
Profiles and calculations stays on the iphone. There is no account to create. The app does not need to send your working data to any cloud or remote server.
When your profiles are confidential, when a network connection is unavailable, or when you simply need an answer while standing away from the desk that makes a big difference.
Built on and by Little CMS
calc ICC is from Little CMS, a well-known color-management engine that has been used in production software for more than 20 years.
For designers, photographers, prepress specialists and other color professionals, calc ICC is a way to keep serious color work close at hand, without pretending that color management is simpler than it is.
